Batman’s Alley Renovation in 2026: What Changes for Your Visit

On May 11, 2026, São Paulo City Hall started renovation works at Batman’s Alley (Beco do Batman), in the Vila Madalena neighborhood. The goal is to fix long-standing flooding problems, improve the paving and make the place more comfortable for visitors, without changing the alley’s identity.

What is being done

  • New drainage: this was the first stage. The area lies along the course of the Rio Verde, a stream that runs channeled underneath the neighborhood.
  • Six rain gardens: planted beds that soak up water and help prevent flooding. The plants chosen were wedelia, moraea (African iris) and lily.
  • Upgraded cobblestones: the street is still paved with stone, but more even and safer to walk on.
  • Accessible sidewalks: designed with wheelchair users, people with strollers and anyone with limited mobility in mind.
  • Benches and a viewpoint: new places to sit down and take in the murals.

When will it be finished?

City Hall planned about five months of works starting in May 2026, which points to completion around October 2026. Public works are often delayed, so check the current situation before you go. We will update this page once completion is confirmed.

Can you visit during the works?

The alley is a public street and people keep visiting it. There may be sections with construction hoardings, uneven ground and murals partly covered. If your main goal is photography, it is worth checking recent photos from other visitors first.

Why the renovation was needed

Batman’s Alley sits at a low point of the neighborhood and tends to flood in heavy rain, so much so that it earned the nickname “Aquaman’s Alley” (Beco do Aquaman). Learn more in Batman’s Alley in the rain.
