Vila Madalena, in the west of São Paulo, is known for its street art, its bars and its bohemian feel. Time Out has ranked it among the coolest neighborhoods in the world. Batman’s Alley is the perfect place to start exploring it. This route complements our Batman’s Alley visitor guide.
Half-day walking route
- 1. Batman’s Alley: the open-air graffiti gallery that made the neighborhood famous.
- 2. Escadaria do Patápio: a tiled, painted staircase right next to the alley, also called the “Batman Staircase”.
- 3. Graffiti streets: Aspicuelta, Simpatia, Faisão, Girassol, Fidalga, Belmiro Braga and Fradique Coutinho all have art on walls and shopfronts. Travessa Alonso and Beco do Nego are nearby too.
- 4. Street-art galleries: the area has galleries such as Ziv Gallery, A7MA, Alma de Rua, Urban Arts and Kobbi & Nielsen.
- 5. Eat and drink: finish at the bars and restaurants around the alley or on Rua Aspicuelta. See Bars in Vila Madalena.
On weekends
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the Batman’s Alley craft fair runs from 9 am until late afternoon, often with live music. It is the liveliest time, but also the most crowded.
Art that comes to life
In the alley itself, the Beco Expandido project uses augmented reality: download the app, point your phone camera at selected murals and they start to move.
Want more street art?
São Paulo’s city hall suggests extending the tour to the Minhocão (Elevado João Goulart), an elevated highway lined with huge graffiti murals on the sides of buildings.
