Beco do Batman, known in English as Batman’s Alley, is São Paulo’s most famous street art spot. It is a short, narrow lane in the Vila Madalena neighborhood where every wall is covered in murals. Entry is free and it is open all the time.
Quick facts
- Where: between Rua Gonçalo Afonso and Rua Medeiros de Albuquerque, Vila Madalena, west São Paulo.
- Price: free. It is a public street.
- Opening hours: none; it is always open. Shops and the craft fair have their own hours.
- Time needed: 45 minutes to 1 hour for the alley; half a day with the neighborhood.
How to get there
Take the metro to Vila Madalena station (Line 2-Green, which also runs under Avenida Paulista) or Fradique Coutinho station (Line 4-Yellow). From either one it is about a 20-minute walk, partly downhill. Ride-hailing apps work well too. Avoid driving on weekends: nearby streets get packed and parking is expensive.
Best time to visit
For photos without crowds, go on a weekday morning on a sunny day. Weekend afternoons are busy and lively, with a small craft fair and the bars of Vila Madalena open around the corner.
Is it safe?
During the day the alley is busy with tourists and generally calm. Use the same care you would in any big city: keep your phone close, avoid flashing valuables, and prefer daylight hours. At night it is darker and emptier. Heavy rain can flood the area, so skip it during storms.
A short history
In the 1970s it was just a dark, unnamed lane. In the 1980s, artists such as Alex Vallauri began painting there, and a stencil of Batman by an unknown artist gave the alley its name. Since then the walls have been repainted again and again. In 2026 the city started a renovation with new drainage, rain gardens and more accessible sidewalks.
