Batman’s Alley (Beco do Batman) at night: what it’s like, what to do and safety tips

Batman’s Alley is best known for daytime photos, but at night Vila Madalena takes on a different mood, with busy bars and the lane lit up. Here is what it’s like and what to consider before you go. The daytime itinerary is in our complete guide to Batman’s Alley.

Is it worth going at night?

Yes, if your plan is to combine the alley with the bars of Vila Madalena. The lane has had night lighting since 2016, so you can see the murals. To photograph the graffiti in full color and detail, however, daylight is much better.

What to do at night

  • Walk through the lit-up lane and the graffiti-covered streets around it.
  • Have a drink at the nearby bars, especially on Rua Harmonia and Rua Aspicuelta. See our list of bars and restaurants.
  • Have dinner at one of the restaurants in the area, such as the Colombian La Candelaria.

Staying safe at night

  • Stick to busy streets and avoid empty shortcuts.
  • Put your phone away between photos.
  • Once the bars close, the lane empties out: try to leave before then.
  • To get back, call a ride-hailing app or a taxi from a busy spot.
