Braille Graffiti in Batman’s Alley: the Mural You See with Your Hands

Among the murals of Batman’s Alley (Beco do Batman) there is one that was made to be touched. It is the braille graffiti from the Graffiti #PraCegoVer project (the Portuguese hashtag means roughly “for the blind to see” and is used in Brazil for image descriptions), created by the artist Subtu and presented as the world’s first braille graffiti.

How it works

Besides the painting, the mural has raised pieces with the braille alphabet. They describe the shapes, colors and sizes of the artwork, allowing blind or visually impaired people to “read” it with their hands. The scene shows two monkeys and a 3D printer.

According to a Reuters report, Subtu spent about three years researching the technique. The braille parts were 3D printed and then hand-painted by the artist.

When it was made

Its unveiling was reported in September 2023. The project later took braille panels to other places, such as the Mundo das Crianças park in Jundiaí, and offers workshops so other artists can learn the technique.

How to find the mural

The alley’s murals are repainted often, and the 2026 renovation may also have changed the surroundings. Ask the shopkeepers or artists who hang out there, or check recent photos before you go. If the mural is still there, touch it gently: that’s what it was made for.
