Very close to Batman’s Alley (Beco do Batman), in Vila Madalena, is the Patápio Staircase (Escadaria do Patápio), also called the Batman Staircase (Escadaria do Batman). Covered in tiles and graffiti, it is a must-see for anyone visiting the area. Find out how it came about and how to fit it into the itinerary in our complete guide to Batman’s Alley.
History
The staircase used to be called Escadão do Jardim das Bananeiras (roughly, the “Big Banana Garden Stairs”). In 2015 it was redecorated with printed art tiles and graffiti, in a project by visual artist Élcio Torres together with Projeto Azul and a ceramics company. It then got its current name, in honor of the musician Patápio Silva.
What to see
- The decorated tiles, which form a mosaic along the steps.
- Graffiti on the side walls, which changes over time, just like in the alley.
- The view of Vila Madalena from the top of the stairs.
How to include it in your visit
The staircase is close to the alley, so you can visit both on the same walk. One possible route:
- Start at Batman’s Alley and take your time walking the lane.
- Head to the Patápio Staircase for photos.
- Continue through the graffiti-covered streets nearby, such as Aspicuelta, Simpatia, Girassol and Fradique Coutinho.
- Finish at one of the bars and restaurants in the area.
Tips
- Wear comfortable shoes: there are a lot of steps.
- On rainy days, watch out for the wet tiles.
- Morning light is the best for photographing the tiles.
